Background

Peter Benoit dreamed of seeing deSingel and the Conservatory constantly evolve over the years to become an international arts centre. This is an ambitious project that aims to offer a space where art cannot only be displayed, but also learned, taught and created. In order to fulfil this role, the infrastructure has had to be extended on several occasions.

Architect Léon Stynen created the campus together with Paul De Meyer in 1968. The atmosphere is one of timeless architecture. The building grows, alters and adapts over time without losing its individuality.

In 2010, the Stéphane Beel firm of architects extended the space by no less than 12,000 m2. This extension is home to offices for deSingel and the VAI, the Flanders Architecture Institute, as well as areas where the College gives performing arts courses (dance, theatre, music). The transparent cube, a glazed inner section, serves public functions, incorporating a multimedia reading room and the LEON deSINGEL CAFE.
